SpringShoulder season11 to 23°C in Paro

Bhutan in May

Last clear month before monsoon, warm and lush.

May is warmer, with green valleys and an increasing chance of rain. It can work for a spring visit if your plans allow for cloud and showers. Check conditions for higher trails before setting out.

Best for

Travellers who want spring scenery and can adapt walks to the weather. Ask about higher routes individually; a warm valley day doesn't tell you the conditions at a pass.

Caveats

Late-May afternoons can be cloudy, especially in central Bhutan. Punakha is hot enough that a midday rest is helpful.

What to pack for May

—Light layers including a t-shirt for warmer afternoons
—Light rain jacket (mid-late May can see brief showers)
—Hiking shoes
—Insect repellent (lower valleys)
—Sunglasses and sunscreen
