Weather and temperatures in January

Western circuit (Paro / Thimphu)

Paro and Thimphu hover around -2 to 12°C (28–54°F). Sunny days, freezing mornings, no rain to speak of.

Punakha (lower valley)

Punakha is the warmest part of the western circuit at this time, 5 to 18°C (41–64°F). Many travellers prefer it as their main base in deep winter.

Central / east (Bumthang / Phobjikha)

Bumthang and Phobjikha are properly cold (-5 to 8°C / 23–46°F). Some homestays have minimal heating; pack a warm sleeping bag liner if you're sensitive to cold.
