A realistic 5-day Bhutan itinerary
Keep the trip focused on Paro and Thimphu, with Tiger's Nest on a properly paced day. Punakha is deliberately left out.

- Pace
- Focused, with one major outing per day
- Best for
- A short first visit, an add-on to India or Nepal, or travellers limiting SDF nights.
- Adult SDF
- $400 for 5 days
- Indicative total
- About $1,160 pp
The indicative total assumes two adults sharing mid-range rooms in shoulder season and includes estimated tour services, SDF, and the visa. International flights are excluded; exact pricing depends on dates, group size, and hotel availability.
- Tiger's Nest hike after time to acclimatise
- A full day in Thimphu rather than a rushed stop
- Paro Dzong, valley scenery, and a flexible arrival day
- Only one hotel-base change
- Punakha is not included; adding it turns the trip into long days in the car.
- There is little weather buffer, so the order may need to change.
- Five days works best when the international flight schedule gives you most of arrival day.
Allow time for the road between stops
Treat this as a practical starting point. Flight times, weather, festival access, and your preferred pace should determine the final order.
- Day1Sleep inThimphuAbout 1–1.5 hours driving
Arrive in Paro and continue to Thimphu
Meet your guide at Paro Airport and take the riverside drive to Thimphu. Keep the afternoon easy with the Memorial Chorten, a market, or a neighbourhood walk while you adjust to the altitude.
- Day2Sleep inThimphu
Explore the capital at a human pace
Visit Buddha Dordenma, a traditional arts or textile centre, and Tashichho Dzong when access permits. Leave room for a cafe, craft workshop, or archery with time to pause between visits.
- Day3Sleep inParoAbout 1–1.5 hours driving
Return to Paro through the western valleys
Drive back to Paro and visit Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum area, and Paro town. A farmhouse meal or hot-stone bath fits well here without tiring your legs before the hike.
- Day4Sleep inParo
Hike to Tiger's Nest
Start early for the climb to Taktsang Monastery. Allow four to six hours for the return hike, temple visit, and rest stops. Keep the afternoon uncommitted in case the hike takes longer than expected.
- Day5Sleep inParo
Departure day
Transfer to Paro Airport. If your flight leaves later, your guide can add a short valley visit, but do not place Tiger's Nest on departure morning.
What 5 days costs before flights
Government charges are the fixed part. Guide, driver, hotel, meals, and entry costs vary with season, group size, and comfort level.

Calculate my 5-day tripCommon questions about 5 days in Bhutan
Is five days enough for Bhutan?
Yes, if you keep the route to Paro and Thimphu. You can see Bhutan's best-known cultural sights and hike Tiger's Nest without racing across the country. Five days is not enough for Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Phobjikha at a comfortable pace.
Can I add Punakha to a five-day Bhutan itinerary?
It is technically possible, but it creates a road-heavy trip and removes useful flexibility around Tiger's Nest and flight times. Seven days is the better minimum when Punakha matters to you.
How much SDF is charged for five days?
A five-day itinerary has four chargeable nights, totalling $400 in adult SDF. Children aged 6–11 pay half the adult nightly rate and children under 6 are exempt. Your exact charge depends on the dates used for the government application.
When should Tiger's Nest be scheduled?
Day four gives the hike room in this route. It gives you time to acclimatise and keeps the hike away from arrival and departure-day flight uncertainty. Your guide can reverse the order if weather makes another day better.
