What fits well
  • Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha without one-night rushing
  • Two nights in Phobjikha Valley
  • Tiger's Nest with recovery time afterwards
  • Room for gentle hikes, farms, and seasonal crane viewing
Honest trade-offs
  • Phobjikha adds mountain-road time and colder nights.
  • Bumthang remains too far east for this route without sacrificing pace.
  • The return from Phobjikha to Paro is the trip's longest road day.
Day-by-day plan

Allow time for the road between stops

Treat this as a practical starting point. Flight times, weather, festival access, and your preferred pace should determine the final order.

  1. Day
    1
    Sleep in
    Paro

    Arrive and settle into Paro

Keep arrival day light with Rinpung Dzong, Paro town, or a riverside walk. This provides a useful altitude and flight buffer before the main route begins.

  2. Day
    2
    Sleep in
    Paro

    Hike to Tiger's Nest

Start early and allow four to six hours for the complete Taktsang hike. Rest afterwards or add a hot-stone bath rather than another major sight.

  3. Day
    3
    Sleep in
    Thimphu
    About 1–1.5 hours driving

    Drive to Bhutan's capital

Travel to Thimphu and visit Buddha Dordenma, the Memorial Chorten, and a local market or craft centre depending on the day of the week.

  4. Day
    4
    Sleep in
    Thimphu

    Thimphu beyond the headline sights

Use a full day for Tashichho Dzong, traditional arts, textile culture, a short valley walk, or an activity matched to your interests.

  5. Day
    5
    Sleep in
    Punakha
    About 2.5–3.5 hours, plus stops

    Cross Dochula Pass to Punakha

Stop among Dochula's 108 chortens, then descend to the warmer Punakha Valley. Visit Punakha Dzong later in the day when the light and crowds are often gentler.

  6. Day
    6
    Sleep in
    Punakha

    Walk through Punakha Valley

Choose Chimi Lhakhang, Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, the suspension bridge, rafting, or a village walk. The lower altitude makes this a comfortable active day.

  7. Day
    7
    Sleep in
    Phobjikha
    About 3–4 hours driving

    Travel into Phobjikha Valley

Climb back into the mountains and continue to the broad glacial valley of Phobjikha. Visit Gangtey Monastery or take a short evening walk if road conditions allow.

  8. Day
    8
    Sleep in
    Phobjikha

A full day in Gangtey and Phobjikha

Walk the Gangtey Nature Trail, visit villages and farms, and look for black-necked cranes in their usual winter season. Outside crane season, the valley is still worth the quiet day.

  9. Day
    9
    Sleep in
    Paro
About 6–7 hours, depending on roads

    Return west to Paro

Make the long return through Punakha and Thimphu with meal and viewpoint stops. Keep the evening free; allow the day for driving and breaks.

  10. Day
    10
    Sleep in
    Paro

    Depart Bhutan

Transfer to Paro Airport. If flight timing permits, add only a short local stop rather than risking the connection.

Common questions about 10 days in Bhutan

Is ten days too long for a first Bhutan trip?

No. Ten days is an excellent first-trip length if you prefer fewer rushed mornings and want to see a quieter valley beyond Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha. It gives the route variety without requiring a domestic flight.

Should a ten-day itinerary include Bumthang?

Usually not alongside Phobjikha. Reaching Bumthang adds long road transfers or a weather-dependent domestic flight. For ten days, choose either a comfortable western-and-Phobjikha route or a faster central-Bhutan route, not both.

When can I see black-necked cranes in Phobjikha?

The cranes are generally present from roughly November into February. Exact arrival and departure timing varies. Phobjikha remains worthwhile outside crane season for its landscape, monastery, and gentle valley walks.

How much SDF is charged for ten days?

A ten-day itinerary has nine chargeable nights, totalling $900 in adult SDF. The $40 visa is itemised separately but remains within our final all-inclusive package total. Children may qualify for reduced SDF rates.
