You can book a Bhutan trip yourself. Since September 2022, visitors have been able to arrange accommodation and other services directly instead of buying a complete tour package. You still need to meet the entry requirements and arrange a licensed guide.
What changed: since September 2022 you can arrange your own hotels, transport, and other services instead of buying one mandatory package. What didn't: you still need an approved visa, you still pay the Sustainable Development Fee, and you still travel with a licensed Bhutanese guide. The guide requirement never went away.
For a first visit, the choice comes down to how much organising you want to do. An operator can coordinate the bookings; booking directly gives you responsibility for fitting them together.
What changed in 2022
The old Minimum Daily Package Rate bundled accommodation, meals, transport and guiding with the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). The reform separated the government fee from travel services, so visitors could choose how to book those services.
The SDF was initially set at USD 200 per adult per night after reopening. A reduction to USD 100 began in September 2023 and is published through 31 August 2027. Check the applicable rate for later travel dates before confirming your budget.

For six nights, the standard international adult SDF is USD 600. The visa application fee is a separate USD 40. Both are included in Guided Bhutan Tours' advertised package totals.
Booking your own hotels and itinerary
You can contact hotels directly or use a booking platform such as Booking.com. Check that a property is approved for tourist stays and compare what each rate includes. A cheaper room rate may exclude meals or transfers that appear in a package quote.
Think about the route before reserving rooms. Extra nights in Bumthang need enough time for the journey there and back. A trek adds its own equipment and support arrangements. Your guide or operator can help you check whether the plan fits the days you have.
Independent booking doesn't remove the guide requirement. Arrange the full guiding scope before travelling rather than assuming you can hire someone only at a temple entrance.
The work involved in organising it yourself
You'll need to coordinate arrival times, hotel reservations and transport with your guide. Ask who will help if a flight changes or a road delay affects the next night's booking.
You can submit your visa application and SDF payment through the official immigration portal. Allow time for corrections and approval before travel. The tourism FAQ describes refunds for cancelled trips and unused SDF nights; bank charges may be deducted. Check the terms for your hotel and other services separately.
For festival travel, confirm accommodation availability before committing to the rest of the itinerary. Public access and the day's programme remain subject to the organisers.

Coordinate your own bookings
Book accommodation and transport directly, submit the entry paperwork yourself and arrange a licensed guide. Keep a clear record of payments, cancellation terms and who is responsible for each part of the trip.
If you want help with just the guiding, hire a licensed Bhutan tour guide around your own bookings. You can also ask us to arrange a vehicle and driver. Tell us how much structure you prefer, and we can leave time open while keeping the route workable.
What a package helps with
A package gives you one point of contact for the arrangements in your quote. That can be useful when a change affects several bookings at once.
Compare the complete cost, including government fees, meals and transport. Our standard packages are priced by chargeable nights: seven advertised days includes six nights. The SDF and visa are already in the total, and an itemised quote shows how they fit within it.
