Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee, usually called the SDF, is a government charge for each night of your stay. For most international adults, the current rate is USD 100 per night. It is one part of your trip cost, so check whether a quoted price includes it.

Rates apply per person, per night. The USD 100 adult rate is a concession confirmed through 31 August 2027. Confirm the fee for your nationality and travel dates before booking.
The current rate
The USD 100 adult rate is a concession from the USD 200 rate introduced in 2022. The published concession runs through 31 August 2027. For travel after that date, confirm the applicable fee before fixing your budget.
A seven-day trip has six chargeable nights, which means USD 600 in SDF per adult at the current rate. If the rate changed to USD 200, the same six nights would cost USD 1,200 in SDF. That is a planning scenario, not an announced price change.

The current rate is a time-limited tourism-recovery concession, not the permanent fee. Nothing beyond 31 August 2027 has been announced, so treat a later return to USD 200 as a budgeting scenario rather than a fixed date.
What the fee supports
The government uses SDF revenue for public services and development, including education, healthcare, conservation and cultural preservation. The Department of Tourism FAQ explains the uses and current payment rules.
The fee doesn't pay for your hotel, meals, guide or vehicle. Those are travel services, even when your operator collects everything in one package payment.
Children and nationality-specific rates
For visitors on the standard international rate, children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50 per night and children under 6 pay no SDF. From age 12, the full rate applies.
Indian nationals use a separate rate of INR 1,200 per person per night, with child concessions. The official FAQ also lists a limited concession for Bangladeshi visitors. Ask for the fee that applies to your passport and dates rather than assuming everyone in a group pays the same amount.
How it appears in our quote
Guided Bhutan Tours' advertised package prices already include SDF and the one-time visa fee. We show them separately within the quote so you can see the government charges and the cost of travel services. You shouldn't add SDF again to the package total.

If you cancel or leave early
Bhutan Travel describes SDF refunds for cancelled trips and nights not spent in the country. Bank charges can be deducted. Follow the current immigration process and check the cancellation terms for your hotels and other services separately.

The SDF can make a longer stay a substantial commitment. Compare the full price with the days you'd like to spend here: an extra valley, a trek or time in one place may be worth the additional nights to you.
